Both Sides of Grizzly Peak

Difficulty:  Moderate, some uphill climbs

Time: 1 ¼  hour

Start at Marin Ave and Hilldale Ave.   Go south on Hilldale to Poppy Ln and turn left.   When you get to Remilard Park, take Keeler Path on the right to the junction of Keeler Ave and Sterling Ave.

Take a sharp left onto Sterling and go for a few blocks until you get to Betty Olds Path on the left.

Take it uphill (about 110 steps) to Whitaker Ave.  Turn right and take it to Sterling Ave, past Grizzly Peak Park.   Turn left on Sterling and continue on until you reach Shasta Ave.  Continue uphill on Shasta, past Queens Rd until you reach Tilden Path on the right.

Take this uphill (about 125 steps) to Grizzly Peak Blvd and turn right.  Follow Grizzly Peak for a ways, being careful for the car traffic since there is no sidewalk for much of the way.  When you pass Arcade Ave, carefully cross to the east side of Grizzly.  About 40 feet to the right you reach Atlas Path.  It’s easy to miss and the sign may be covered by trees.

Take this uphill (about 160 feet) until you reach Hill Rd.  Turn left and follow the road where a sign says “No Outlet”.  At the end of the road there is a downhill house driveway.  Go  about halfway down the driveway until you reach Scott Newall Path on the right.

Follow this path until you come out on Hill Rd again.  Continue on Hill Rd until you come to the Tilden Park entrance at Shasta Rd.  Turn left and in a few yards you reach Grizzly Peak.  Cross Grizzly and turn right.  When you reach Stoddard Path on the left, take it downhill to Miller Ave.

Turn right and take Miller for several blocks.  You then have 2 choices.

1)  When you reach Poppy Path on the left, take it downhill to Poppy Ln at Remillard Park and take Poppy to Hilldale Ave.  Turn right on Hilldale and take it to the starting point at Marin Ave.

2) Continue on Miller where it ends at Poppy Ln.  Turn right on Poppy and go to Hilldale Ave. Turn right on Hilldale and take it to the starting point at Marin Ave.

Paths Above Tunnel Road

Difficulty:  Moderate, many uphill roads

Time: 1 hour

Start at Ashby Ave and Claremont Ave.   Go east on  Ashby as it turns into Tunnel  Rd, staying on the north side of the road.  You pass the Claremont Hotel & Spa on your left as you head up Tunnel  Rd.

When you get to Bridge Road, take it uphill to Alvarado Road, a long winding road that you will return to several times during this hike.  Turn left and continue on Alvarado Rd until you get to Alvarado Pl on the right.   Go a short distance to the end and then take the dirt road leading to Evergreen Path

Take this uphill (about 120 steps) to Evergreen Ln.

Follow Evergreen Ln to Slater Ln and turn right.  When you reach Alvarado Rd, turn right and continue a short way to Eucalyptus Path on the right.

Take this downhill (about 82 steps plus ramps) until you come to Sunset Trail leading off to the left.  Note that Eucalyptus Path continues down further to Alvarado Rd.

Take Sunset Trail to the end where it meets the middle of Willow Walk.

Take the downhill part of Willow Walk back to Alvarado Rd and turn right.  When you get to Bridge Rd, turn left and follow it back to Tunnel Rd.  Turn right and take this back to the starting point at Ashby Ave and Claremont Ave.
