Both Sides of Grizzly Peak

Difficulty:  Moderate, some uphill climbs

Time: 1 ¼  hour

Start at Marin Ave and Hilldale Ave.   Go south on Hilldale to Poppy Ln and turn left.   When you get to Remilard Park, take Keeler Path on the right to the junction of Keeler Ave and Sterling Ave.

Take a sharp left onto Sterling and go for a few blocks until you get to Betty Olds Path on the left.

Take it uphill (about 110 steps) to Whitaker Ave.  Turn right and take it to Sterling Ave, past Grizzly Peak Park.   Turn left on Sterling and continue on until you reach Shasta Ave.  Continue uphill on Shasta, past Queens Rd until you reach Tilden Path on the right.

Take this uphill (about 125 steps) to Grizzly Peak Blvd and turn right.  Follow Grizzly Peak for a ways, being careful for the car traffic since there is no sidewalk for much of the way.  When you pass Arcade Ave, carefully cross to the east side of Grizzly.  About 40 feet to the right you reach Atlas Path.  It’s easy to miss and the sign may be covered by trees.

Take this uphill (about 160 feet) until you reach Hill Rd.  Turn left and follow the road where a sign says “No Outlet”.  At the end of the road there is a downhill house driveway.  Go  about halfway down the driveway until you reach Scott Newall Path on the right.

Follow this path until you come out on Hill Rd again.  Continue on Hill Rd until you come to the Tilden Park entrance at Shasta Rd.  Turn left and in a few yards you reach Grizzly Peak.  Cross Grizzly and turn right.  When you reach Stoddard Path on the left, take it downhill to Miller Ave.

Turn right and take Miller for several blocks.  You then have 2 choices.

1)  When you reach Poppy Path on the left, take it downhill to Poppy Ln at Remillard Park and take Poppy to Hilldale Ave.  Turn right on Hilldale and take it to the starting point at Marin Ave.

2) Continue on Miller where it ends at Poppy Ln.  Turn right on Poppy and go to Hilldale Ave. Turn right on Hilldale and take it to the starting point at Marin Ave.

South on Euclid from Marin

Difficulty:  Moderate,  many uphill paths and roads

Time:  1 hour

This hike heads down Euclid Ave to the Berkeley Rose Garden and then returns uphill through streets and paths.  There are several options for the start.

  •  Start at Marin and Euclid and head south.
  •  Start south on Hilldale from Marin.  When you reach Billie Jean Walk, take it downhill to   Euclid and turn left.

  • Start on south on Hilldale from Marin.  When you reach Regal Rd, take Easter Way downhill to Euclid Ave and turn left.  Note Easter Way continues downhill to Cragmont Ave and then downhill to Spruce St.

  • Start on south on Hilldale from Marin.  When you reach Regal Rd, turn left and continue to Cragmont  Ave.   Turn left on Cragmont and take it to Bret Harte Rd.  Turn right and go to Keith Ave and turn left.  When you come to Bret Harte Way, take it downhill to Euclid and turn left.

  • Same as above but continue on Keith past Bret Harte Way and when you come to Lower El Mirador Path, take it downhill to Euclid and turn left.

Whichever path you choose to start, when you get to Euclid, continue south towards the Rose Garden.    When you get to Eunice St, take Tamalpais Path uphill (about 190 step plus several ramps) to Tamalpais Rd.

Turn left on Tamalpais Rd and take it to Shasta Rd.  Turn left on Shasta, take it uphill to Keith Rd and turn left on Keith.  When you get to Lower Covert Path on the right, take it uphill (about 145 steps) to Cragmont Ave. Note, Covert Path continues uphill to Keeler Ave.

Take a left on Cragmont and follow it a ways, passing Martinez Path on the left.

Shortly after passing Bret Harte Rd you reach Sterling Path on the right.

Take this uphill (150 steps) to Sterling Ave and Keeler Ave and go a few steps left to  reach Keeler Path  on the left.

Follow this through Remillard Park and come out on Poppy Lane. This is a popular rock climbing site. Take Poppy left to Hilldale Ave, turn right and take this to Marin Ave. If you started at Euclid, turn left on Marin and go downhill 1 block to Euclid.

South on Hilldale from Marin (longer)

Difficulty:  Hard. Many up and down paths and roads
Time:  a) 1 1/4 hours shorter hike b) 2 hours longer hike


Start at Hilldale Ave and Marin Ave and head south on Hilldale.  Follow Hilldale to Regal Rd, turn left and follow it to Pinnacle Path on the left.

Take it uphill (about 30 steps plus 2 long ramps) to Poppy Lane and turn right.  
When you get to Remillard Park, take Keeler Path to Keeler  Ave.

Turn right on Keeler, heading to Bret Harte Lane Path on the left.

Take it uphill (about 135 steps) to Sterling and turn right until you reach Betty Olds Path.

Take it uphill (about 110 steps) to Whitaker Ave and turn right.  When you come to Sterling and Whitaker, take Whitaker Path downhill (about 140 steps) to Keeler Ave and turn right.

When you reach Upper Covert Path take it downhill (about 160 steps) to Cragmont Ave.

Note the path continues downhill on Lower Covert Path.  Don’t take this but instead turn left on Cragmont.  When you get to Shasta Ave and Cragmont, veer to the right onto Shasta.  Follow it until you get to Northgate Path on the left.

Take it uphill (about 240 steps) to Northgate Ave and turn left.  When you get to Quail Ave, turn right.  At Campus Dr, turn right and follow it to Lower Glendale Path on the left.

Take it uphill (about 140 steps) to Queens Rd and turn right.  Make a left on Fairlawn Dr and take Upper Glendale Path uphill (85 steps) to Fairlawn and turn right.

When you get to Columbia Walk on the left, take it uphill (about 45 steps) to Grizzly Peak Blvd.

At this point, you can shorten the hike by turning left on Grizzly Peak and following it to Marin Ave.  Then go downhill for 2 blocks to reach the starting point at Hilldale. 

To continue the longer hike, turn right on Grizzly and go about a half mile, passing Avenida Dr and Senior Ave until you get to Summit Ln.  Turn right on Summit and take Wilson Walk on the right downhill (about 123 steps) to Wilson Circle.

Turn right on Olympus, right on Fairlawn and left on Avenida.  Follow Avenida, past Queens Rd and make a right on Campus Dr.  At the junction with Delmar Ave, Campus continues to the right.  Follow Campus until you get to La Loma Path on the left.  You have 2 options:

1) Shorter: Continue on Campus past Glendale Ave.
2) Longer: Take La Loma Path downhill (about 160 steps) to Glendale Ave and turn right.  Follow Glendale Ave uphill to the right back to Campus Dr and turn left.

Cross Quail and continue on Campus.  When Campus meets Shasta, take Shasta  uphill to Sterling and turn left.  When you get to Stevenson Path on the right, take it uphill (about 144 steps) to Miller Ave.

Turn left on Miller, passing Anne Brower path and Ina Coolbrith on the right until you reach Poppy Path on the left.  Take it downhill (about 185 steps) to Poppy Ln at Remillard park.

Take Poppy Ln to Hilldale, turn right and take Hilldale to the starting point at Marin.
